Leaphia and Cicely

Two school friends, who recently found each other through ‘Searching for a Memory’, contacted the team again to find another classmate. Leaphia and Dora wanted to try and find their friend Cicely, who they had not seen in nearly 60 years. The girls attended The Lillie & Stone Girls High School, Newark, and also went to the local Sea Rangers Club.
They obviously had so many memories they could reminisce, but were again stuck on how to start looking for her.
The first search performed when trying to find a friend or relative is to find their birth entry on the birth indexes. The search for Cicely’s birth record provided the team with her year of birth and middle initial, both vital in making sure the correct searches are carried out. It was then possible to find her marriage record, which uncovered her husband’s name. A search of the electoral roll found Cicely living in Stapleford, and a letter was sent to her. She promptly responded and was delighted to hear that her friends were trying to find her. They all plan to meet up as soon as they can to chat about the memories they hold of their younger days

Gail and Keith

Gail Webster, from Essex, was only twelve when she last saw her half brother Keith; this was nearly forty years ago. As she did not know how to conduct a people search, she contacted ‘Searching for a Memory’ with the basic information she knew about him. Her parent’s marriage had broken down and she knew Keith was born as a result of their father’s new relationship.
It was necessary to search for his birth record on the birth indexes, which confirmed his full name and year of birth. A people search using Tracesmart was a success and Keith was found on the current electoral roll living in the same county. Keith had learnt of Gail’s existence through rumours, but did not think to believe them. Now, both he and his wife are looking forward to meeting Gail for the first time and all are certainly delighted with the outcome.

Margaret and Pat

A recent school reunion in Lancashire prompted a group of old friends to try and complete their mission to find missing class members. Margaret Hope was eager to find one of their classmates, Pat Marsden, who had also attended Weston County School in Great Harwood, Blackburn. The school friends had not been in contact since the 1950’s and so contacted ‘Searching for a Memory’ to ask for help with the trace.

The first task undertaken was to find Pat’s marriage record, as this would supply her married name and also her husband’s forename. A simple people search was carried out and Pat and her husband were found on the electoral roll living in Pulborough, West Sussex. After leaving school she had worked as a secretary, eventually marrying in 1959 to a Patrick, and together they had five children.

Margaret reminisced, “In our early teens we went hiking in the Lake District, I remember one occasion when we climbed the ‘Coniston Old Man’, just before reaching the summit, we sheltered in a hut, exhausted and hungry. We had not brought a lunch pack with us and all we had was a cheese sandwich that my mother had thrust on me as I was leaving our house, not much but it kept us going. It will be good to recall old times with Pat.”

Peggy and Daphne

Peggy and Daphne met whilst working at the Army and Navy Stores in Victoria, London during the 1960’s. They were good friends who not only enjoyed working together but also spent their free time socialising with each other. Peggy, now 75, contacted ‘Searching for a Memory’ explaining that they had both moved around and had lost contact many years ago. She was unsure whether it would be possible to find Daphne after almost 40 years, but was able to provide useful information that enabled the search to get underway.

A marriage search was performed, as Peggy knew she had married, but did not know the name of Daphne’s husband. The search of the marriage indexes showed that Daphne had married a gentleman named Donald. The marriage records also revealed middles initials, helping to precisely identify the correct individuals. A simple people search was carried out and they were found living in Great Yarmouth. A property ownership search confirmed that they still lived at the property.

Daphne’s response to the letter, explaining that Peggy was looking to be reunited with her, was very emotional and she was extremely pleased to be back in touch with her old friend.
“To me it’s like winning the lottery, actually finding my old friend again, we are meeting up in September and I can’t wait to see her”.

Ever since their school days, Jim Miller and Stuart Macaulay were the best of friends and when Jim married Brenda, Stuart was their best man. Stuart eventually married Margaret and both couples continued to be the best of friends.
They kept in contact through numerous house moves up until the mid 1980’s when after another address change they lost touch. Jim and Brenda recently made an enquiry to try and find their old friends as they were unsure how to find someone. A search of the current electoral roll showed that the couple were living not far from them in Cornwall. A Land Registry search confirmed that Stuart and Margaret were the current owners, and a letter was sent to the address.

Margaret and Annabel

Margaret Gray and her husband will be celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary this year, and they are planning to have a party to mark the occasion. They were hoping to invite as many of the original guests that attended their big day 50 years ago, but could not find one of the bridesmaids, Annabel. They were desperate to find her and catch up with her after such a long time, but were unsure how to go about it.

Mrs Gray contacted ‘Searching for a Memory’, who use the Tracesmart search engine, and the search began. The first task undertaken was to find Annabel’s birth record; this provided a year of birth and also any middle names that might otherwise have been unknown. The birth indexes revealed that her middle initial was ‘M’ and this was a key piece of information, as it was possible to identify her marriage from the marriage indexes. Margaret confirmed that the name of the husband found on the marriage records matched that of the young man she was courting when Margaret was married.

A people search of the current electoral roll revealed that Annabel and Peter were now living in Coventry. They were both delighted to have been found and plan to make an extra special effort to attend the celebrations very soon.

“It was like the years had melted away when we spoke again after all this time”.

Julie and Rachel

Julie and Rachel have known each other since they were four years old, when they both lived on the same street in Twickenham. Every weekend they would visit the nearby riding stables together, but then Rachel and her family moved away, and the best friends were sadly split up.

The first task was to find Rachel’s birth records on the birth indexes; this provided us with her full name including middle name and also the year of birth. As usual with traces involving females, it was necessary to search for her married name using a marriage search, and a match was found on the marriage indexes within Tracesmart. It was then possible to perform a people search using the current electoral roll and she was found at an address in Wokingham.

Rachel was really pleased that Julie had taken the trouble to find her and the e-mails are now flying fast and furiously between them.

“It’s wonderful to chat again after all this time.Thank you very much!”

Patrick and Douglas

Patrick Donovan and Douglas first met at school in 1940; they both attended the Bishopshalt Grammar School in Hillingdon. After leaving school in 1946 following their matriculation examinations, Douglas joined the RAF as a Halton apprentice. Patrick went on to study at Aero Engineering, he says “As Doug was limited to being in Halton RAF camp at weekends I would take his girlfriend Pam, later to become his wife, on my motorbike to see him.” It was that kind of alliance that later led them to be reunited.

Eventually, after National Service in the RAF, Patrick went on to work for Rolls Royce Aero Engines in Bristol, and Douglas settled in Harrow to fly Lincolns with his aircrew. It was this distance that led to them losing touch and after settling into retirement, Patrick set about trying to find his friend again. A simple people search was performed on the Electoral Roll and Douglas and Pam were found living in Aylesbury, coincidently not far from where Patricks currently lives.

They are busy catching up on the missing years, and a reunion is planned in the next few weeks.

Donna and Toni

Tragically, Donnas’ mother passed away nearly 30 years ago when she was a young girl. This was made even more terrible as her aunt died not long after that, leaving three daughters and a son. Donna and her cousins had always been close, but without the encouragement from their families they reluctantly lost contact.

A people search was performed to find her cousin but too many results were recovered, this is because their surname is one of most popular in the UK. A marriage search was carried out using the marriage indexes for the girls and eventually their new married names were found. A people search was successful in provided an address for Toni, and a letter was sent to her.

After a lengthy period of being apart they are now looking to future family occasions they will be able to share together once again.

Roger and Dave

Roger first met Dave in the 1970’s, and was eager to meet up with his friend once again and find out how he was doing. Roger owned a petrol station in Essex, which had an accessory shop attached to it where Dave began to work part time for him to earn extra money for the family. The two friends eventually lost contact when Dave and his family moved away from the area.

Roger remembered that Dave’s wife was called Daphne and they also had two daughters. A simple people search within the current electoral roll was carried out and only 17 results were found using his full name. A quick look through each address profile was required to find his wife’s name, this was completed in minutes and their current address was found. It was also possible to complete a Property Ownership Search to confirm he was still the existing owner. A letter was sent to the property, and Dave helpfully contacted us and corroborated that he was the right person.

Roger said,” I’d have given up all hope of finding them, after 30 years. I didn’t realize how easy it would be to find a friend. No plans have been made to meet up as yet, that’s for the future.”

Cass and Geoffrey

Cass has always wanted to try and find her birth mother ever since she found out that she was adopted. This wish was spurred on when two years ago she found out she had cancer and has since been undergoing chemotherapy.

The details provided on her adoption file gave her mother’s name and a last known address, but after 50 years this information was out of date. The first step was to ascertain when her mother, Dolores was born; this is done thought the birth records, and following this, a marriage search was performed using our searchable marriage indexes. It transpired that Dolores had married in 1969, but no matches could be found on the edited electoral roll, it was therefore necessary to check the death index and a match was found. She had sadly passed away in 1992 at the age of 59.

A copy of her death certificate was ordered and this provided her next of kin, which transpired to be her son Geoffrey. He had always known about Cass, and also tried to find her, but was unsuccessful as a result of her being adopted, and also having very little information about her. Cass has know been in touch with the brother she never knew existed and they are arranging a reunion very soon.

Karen and Jeffrey

Karen contacted Tracesmart in the hope of finding her father who had left the family home nearly 40 years ago. She was very young and had no memories of him. With the help of her mother she was able to provide enough information to start searching.

Jeffrey was born in Ireland, which made it very difficult to find his family, so a search of the electoral roll was performed. No matches were found, so a death search was carried out and this provided a suitable match. The certificate was ordered using the codes given with the death indexes, and the information on the certificate furthermore confirmed this was sadly Karen’s father.

The certificates provide next of kin information, which listed a son called Jeffrey and his address. An address search confirmed he was still at the property and a letter was sent to him. Understandably he was shocked to learn after all these years that his father had fathered other children, and he was a half brother to them.

Elizabeth and Alan

Elizabeth had not had contact with her father, Alan, since the 1950’s when her parents divorced. It was her mother’s decision not to continue with their relationship, and Elizabeth waited many years before thinking about trying to search for relatives that she had never met. As she was now living in America, she asked Tracesmart to assist her with the trace.

Elizabeth was able to supply her father\'s age and last known location, and a people search was performed. No suitable results were found, so a death search was performed. A possible match was found on Tracesmart, and Elizabeth decided to obtain his death certificate, which would provide his next of kin details. When the certificate arrived an address search confirmed that his widow was still living at the address, and she was contacted by telephone. It transpired Elizabeth had two brothers she never knew existed and they had made attempts to locate her before.

“I wanted to thank Tracesmart again for all the information you gave me. I know that I could never have completed this research on my own, so I\'m really grateful to you...
Abigail’s parents had separated when she was very young, and she was desperate to know where her father was after 25 years apart. Her mother passed away a few years ago, and had always told Abigail that she had chosen not to respond to Paul’s letters, making her even more determined to find her father. She filled out the application form with all the information she could remember, but could only provide very little significant information about Paul, her father.

A search was performed using birth indexes, and a number of possibilities were found. It was necessary to try searching for each match using the people search facility on the electoral roll.

Her parent’s relationship broke down 30 years ago, and Paul was transferred to Germany with the army. From the information provided on the birth indexes it was possible to acquire his brother’s name.
Betty and Jessie

Olive McPerson left her home in Scotland to work in Birmingham in a munitions factory in 1942. Other than a brief visit home in the early 1950’s, her sister Jessie never saw her again. It must have been an anxious time for all involved with the Wartime efforts, and Jessie never stopped thinking about her sister.
Jessie’s daughter, Betty, contacted ‘Searching for a Memory’ knowing that she had cousins in Birmingham, and hoping they could be found. Enough information was provided and a people search of the electoral roll was performed which offered no suitable results. A search of the death indexes confirmed that unfortunately she had passed away, aged 57.

The research carried out yielded information that she had 11 children, and her husband’s name was Dennis. A search for relatives on the current electoral roll enabled us to find some of her children, who still reside in Birmingham, and they informed Betty that three other cousins were living in Australia. Following this search for relatives, Betty is now elated and reunions are busy being planned. She says..

“It’s been a bit hectic; everyone wants to run up to Scotland, especially those in Australia they are so enthusiastic, it’s like they’ve won the lottery”.

Nancy and Irene

Nancy, together with sisters Elizabeth and Isabella, had not had contact with their other sister Irene for almost 50 years. They contacted ‘Searching For A Memory’ hoping that she may be found and reunited with the rest of the family. The sisters explained that Irene had left Edinburgh to work in London in 1947, and in time had married and had a son. Unfortunately, with the large distance between them and various house moves, contact ceased.

A simple marriage search was performed, and this provided her married name. They then carried out a people search using the Electoral Roll and her address was found.

Irene also wanted to find her brother, whom she had not had contact with in nearly 45 years. His name was found to be on the Electoral Roll, living in the South of England and a letter was sent to the address.

Now the siblings can look forward to the family occasions when they can all be present, and not have to think about the absent members of the family. The sisters are pictured sharing their first New Year’s party with the rest of the family.

Geri and Stephen

Geri, from Leicester, contacted Tracesmart as she was desperate to find her younger brother. Both had lost touch due to circumstances and various house moves. Geri, who had not seen Stephen for 20 years, provided her brother’s full name with an approximate date of his birth, she also provided another brother’s name, Adrian. Both brothers were last known to be living in Surrey.

Initially an electoral roll search was conducted on Tracesmart, which provided an address in Dunoon, Scotland. No positive reply was received when the property was contacted and following a search on the land registry data, it was evident the property had recently been sold. At the same time the records revealed the name of Stephen’s wife, which led us, following an additional address search to Stephen’s new home, again in Danoon. As Stephen was ex-directory we located a neighbour to pass on a message and contact was eventually established.

Brother and sister have now been in touch by phone many times and plans for them to be reunited are well underway.

Trevor and Rene

Trevor Donaldson, with the aim of organising a surprise reunion for his parent’s 50th wedding anniversary, contacted Tracesmart in the hope of finding one of the bridesmaids at his parent’s wedding. The wedding was back in 1958 in Croydon and the family has not seen Rene since those days. The only information Trevor was able to impart for the missing person search was Rene’s maiden name and that he thought Rene had married a policeman many years later. It was also known that she had a brother named Alan.

The name supplied was Rene, though in all likelihood the correct name would be Irene. A thorough birth search was performed for Irene and Alan. Following further search, a brother and sister match with the same mother’s maiden name and birth area was established.

As a people search for Alan was inconclusive, a death search was performed, establishing that Alan had indeed died. This in turn revealed Alan’s widow and a further people search was conducted for her. Alan’s widow confirmed Irene was indeed her sister in law and contact with Rene, the missing bridesmaid was achieved. Both parties are delighted and a surprise reunion is organised for 2008.

Ieesha and Michael

Ieesha, after nearly 15 years without seeing her father, asked Tracesmart to help her resume contact with him. Ieesha provided his full name, and place of birth, which assisted in finding his birth entry on the General Records Office database. As no match was found for him on the Edited Electoral Roll it was necessary to search for relatives.

Using the information found on his birth index, it was possible to find a match who shared the same mother’s maiden name and place of birth. A letter was sent to a potential sister that was found using the People Search, and the most recent Electoral Roll. She obligingly telephoned and confirmed that she was Michael’s sister and was willing to contact him and assist with this people search. Michael was overjoyed to hear that Ieesha had been trying to contact him, and there were a few tears from Ieesha after hearing he had been found.

Ieesha has now been reunited with her father, and also her brothers, some of whom she had never met.

Treasure, David & Sandra

Treasure, from South Africa, contacted Tracesmart trying to contact her friends who had returned home to the UK in 1998. She was unsure how to go about finding them, and asked for our assistance. A people search was conducted with David and Sandra’s names, using a nationwide search, which produced three possible results. Treasure provided the names of their children, and the eldest, Michael, was eligible to be included on the electoral roll which narrowed the search even further, resulting in a successful trace.
“When you found our long lost friends, I thought you were great. People like you give the world hope that there are actually people still out there, (complete strangers) who do go the extra mile and do actually care. Amazing! We are truly united with Dave & Sandra and email each other regularly. (Thanks to you) You guys are THE BEST!” Treasure Coester

Denise and Daniel

Denise, from Cleveland, was desperate to find her father after contact ceased 30 years ago following her parents’ divorce. She contacted Tracesmart and provided his full name, approximate age and indicated he had remarried and had more children. No matches were found using a people search, then a death search was performed and a possible result was found. The death record gave his full name and date of birth; this information was relayed to Denise, who concurred that unfortunately this was her father.

The death certificate was ordered through UK Certificates, and arrived within a week, providing details of his son, who was his next of kin. An address search was performed using the details from his certificate, also known as a people search by address. A letter was sent, and Daniel replied confirming his relationship to Denise, and that he was delighted to be reunited with her.
